Beaded Bookmarks make a perfect gift!

This week we are featuring a wonderful blog written by our very own Pattern and Project Creator Jennifer. She is the awesome person that creates every single project sheet that you see :-) So let's all give her a big warm Cousin Family welcome!

I love making beaded bookmarkers for friends and family, and I especially like to personalize them for the person or occasion. If you’re already giving a book as a gift then why not make it even more special with a handmade book marker?

A beaded bookmarker is simple to make and they’re a great way to use up some of those left over beads and supplies. A variety of cords can be used, anything from ribbon, suede, leather, cotton, or chain. I’ve even seen people use beading wire and seed beads, but I prefer to use materials that will lay flat.

  • Simply cut a length of cord approximately 4” longer than the book. If you don’t have a book, then a 12-14”

length is a good standard to work with.

  • If you’re using ribbon, suede, cotton or leather, attach metal cord ends to both ends of the cord.

  • Then use jump rings to attach charms or chains to the cord ends.

The purple ribbon book marker uses jump rings to attach a cross charm at one end and a short length of small chain at the other. I made bicone drops on decorative head pins and attached the drops to the small chain.

For the chain book markers I either attached a pendant at the end with a jump ring or made beaded links and drops and attached them at the chain ends.

The braided book marker uses a variety of cords including cotton, suede and leather. I simply braided them together and attached the metal cord ends. Each cord end has a 6mm jump ring attached to it. The lobster claw clasps are connected to the charms with 4mm jump rings. Simply attach the charms onto the 6mm jump rings for a different look!

My personal favorite is the blue suede bookmarker with a mini frame charm (The picture at the top of the blog). I shrunk a picture down to a 3/8” square on the computer and printed it out.  Inspired by my favorite colors, I linked the jump rings (already attached to pre-made charms) together into a long link. I added the frame charm at the end of the linked jump rings. Then I attached an alphabet charm and a bicone drop at the other end of the suede along with a little fringe I created with some left over suede and a small ribbon clamp.

I hope you enjoy creating your own personalized beaded bookmarkers for yourself or as a gift!

Jennifer
