Geometric

Geo Blog

From the wonderfully talented and fashion forward Nick D.

The must-have accessories of the moment are easier to work with than ever and better yet, take on a surprising “chameleon effect” when it comes to following the latest trends. Geometric-inspired designs have shaped the styles of the season and are perfectly adaptable to enhance any look.  The strong lines and structured edges of these pieces demand attention, while the classic symmetry and repetition evoke a classic bygone era. Many designers have their own creative approach to these structured styles and have even used the design philosophy to create a defining niche for their particular brand.  Everyone has their favorite take on the trend; common variations of geometric designs are influential to Art-Deco, Tribal and Mod 60’s styles. Newfound inspirations have a punk-influenced aesthetic, referencing industrial machinery and urban architecture. The shapes themselves can be represented in single or multi-dimensional patterns and can be easily incorporated into any wardrobe.

A pair of linear statement earrings in geometric forms is a great way for anyone to introduce this style into everyday wear. When simple shapes are stacked together in a drop earring, they create a powerful effect that adds instant edge to any outfit. Popular shapes for drop earrings include diamonds, hoops, chevrons and triangles. Another exciting interpretation of the trend is being seen in stacked bangles and metallic cuffs.  Thick wooden bangles in a variety of natural grains and intricate carvings suggest a retreat to a remote island or desert safari. Stacking these bracelets in various geometric shapes creates greater visual interest and contrast. Oversized metal cuffs are being used to add distinction to long-sleeved gowns and provides a clean streamlined look. Cone bracelets are also becoming more popular and give off a tough, downtown street-wise vibe. This spiked style looks great when paired with a cuffed blazer or other business casual wear.

Rose gold is being introduced into more geometric jewelry designs and prevents the jewelry from looking overly futuristic or harsh. The softer and lighter colored metal is often used for bulky Egyptian collared necklaces or given a hammered texture for large earring designs. These pieces are great for showcasing a neckline and are sure to get you noticed. Be on the watch for more collar or choker necklaces (those 18 inches long or less) that combine geometric styling and rose gold. Remember that chunky bracelets, geometric pendants and wide beads look best when paired with clean style lines. These accessories add interest to simple jackets and tailored pieces or any basic top. Try to avoid wearing busy floral or checkered patterns, and detailed ruffles or other flourishes.

New mixed materials, such as combinations of enamel and wood, provide endless variations of the geometric trend. More organic materials are also increasing in popularity and are being combined with chain or acrylic beads. These are commonly used in bib necklace designs and many have a repeating pattern that radiates outward like the sun’s rays. The alternating long and short organic shapes gracefully curve along the collarbone and create a natural focal point. The integration of simple shapes and fluid design make geometric accessories a trend that will always be in style. How do you incorporate structural forms into your jewelry designs? Would you feel comfortable wearing these oversized shapes as an everyday accessory? Whether you identify yourself with a triangle or prefer a tetrahedron, you’re sure to find a great shape to accent your personal style.         ~Nick~
